Get set to mark your calendars, people! May 28 marks the start of Hey Come Inside: Project 165’s first open house event of 2010. For this very special gig, we're transforming our studios and common spaces - kitchen and washroom included - into temporary exhibition sites and inviting the public come inside for a unique look-see. The show features recent drawing, painting, installation, video, performance art, photography and other projects by studio artists and volunteers of Project 165. (I'm super excited to be bringing back a very special performance of my own, the Free Psychic Reading Series: an investigation of intuition, extrasensory potential and people-reading. I don't pretend to see into the future. I simply use my powers of perception and conversational agility to open a dialogue with people who seek clarity in their personal lives.) Attention Drawers & Illustrators!
I want you to apply to When a Stranger Calls a Friend of a Friend. This curated show will act as a visual survey of cross-cultural parallels in contemporary legend and the performance, transmission, form and function of modern urban folklore around the world. I'm really excited about this one. It reflects my growing interest in folklore and, more specifically, the act of myth-propagation in everyday life. I've always been into storytelling, both as transmitter and receiver. But my love of story-telling really blew up last summer, when I hit the road to promote We Made a Deal with the Devil - a drawing show that explored themes of adventure, risk and collective myth. Traveling with the show - sailing across Eastern Canada for a month, setting it up the show in parks and cafes and whatnot, talking to people about the stories behind the drawings and hearing new stories from the people I met along the way - really got me thinking about the importance of storytelling in m...
