Announcing the first judge for the Broken Pencil Zine Awards: Naomi Moyer

The deadline for the Broken Pencil Zine Awards is fast approaching! Zinesters can submit through Submittable by July 31 and be enshrined in zine glory forever! Not to mention, you can stand to win some cash, with $2000 in prize money across 5 categories of zine.

We’re excited to announce the first of our three judges, who will be bringing their personal expertise to the table as we select winners. The first judge…. Naomi Moyer!

Naomi Michelle Moyer is a new Mama and a self taught, multidisciplinary artist and writer.  She often finds herself delving into African diasporic (her)histories, perceptions of Blackness, community and how they connect to Black experiences.  Naomi is known for her zine, Black Women and Self Care:  Thoughts on Mental Health, Oppression & Healing; and more recently her print series:  Black Women in Canada, which pays tribute to some of Canada’s most radical Black feminists from 1793 to 2006.  Naomi’s work stems from collaborating with grassroots organizations and publishers, designing posters, t shirts and illustrations with themes of resistance and empowerment.

Check out Naomi’s zine philosophy column from a recent issue of Broken Pencil, and don’t forget to submit your zines to the Broken Pencil Zine Awards!
