Duets for Abdelrazik
Sudanese-born Canadian citizen Abousfian Abdelrazik was arrested and tortured in Sudan after being erroneously labeled a terrorist by the United States. After multiple stints of imprisonment and interrogation, he was finally cleared by Sudan, only to have Canada refuse to issue him travel documents or otherwise facilitate his return to the country he’d lived in for almost 20 years.
This haunting album was created as a statement of solidarity for Abdelrazik. Each of the six tracks pairs Montreal activist and pianist Stefan Christoff with another musician. These are sweeping, thoughtful duets that evoke pain in the soul and insist upon redemption. (Hal Niedzviecki)
