Printed Matter pops up in the East Village

NEW YORK’S LEGENDARY zine and art-book shop Printed Matter is expanding its footprint with a new satellite location embedded in the Swiss Institute in the East Village. The shop, which puts on the New York Art Book Fair, is well-known for its high-brow and experimental collection of publications. With this move to the historic heart of Manhattan’s art, punk, and activist scenes comes a unique opportunity to reconnect with the scrap-pier roots of DIY zines and printmaking. Director Max Schumann is a longtime East Village resident and “definitely plugged into the anarchist, fold-and-staple, punk zine-making culture,” said Sean Fuller, who manages the new location, adding that they intend to open the space to the neighbourhood through community workshops and events. “We hope to keep the DIY East Village aesthetic alive.” The new location opens June 21.
