Also As Well Too: A Living Room for Artbooks in Winnipeg

It all started in a living room—Alexis “Letch” Kinloch’s living room, to be precise.

“I had been looking for ways to start another art space in Winnipeg with no money,” explains Kinloch.

She was inspired by intimate galleries like Morbid Anatomy, Toronto’s Contemporary Zoological Conservatory and the Bookmobile. In May 2015 she opened the doors, sounded the charge, and her in-house library/art space Also As Well Too was born. Canadian independent artists of all stripes were quick to answer the call for donations and loans, as were people as far flung as Madrid and Glasgow. As a result, a beautiful variety of zines, art books, records and tapes now line Kinloch’s shelves — and they’re all available for borrowing. The library is in-house only, with weekly open hours.

“The whole purpose of the space is giving people an opportunity to experience these artworks,” says Kinloch, who has already taken the library on a summer tour and hosted artists-in-residence.
