Canzine Portraits: Byrne Creek Secondary School’s Media Arts 9 & 10 Class

This year at Canzine West, we’re very pleased to welcome some student representatives from the Media Arts 9 & 10 classes from Byrne Creek Secondary School in Burnaby, B.C., who will be tabling with a collection of zines they made in class. According to teacher Trina Moulin, the class encourages students to explore a variety of artistic tools – from drawing and painting to Photoshop, Flash, and Final Cut Pro. After experimenting with comic creation and photocopying, Moulin wondered if zine-making might be another effective outlet for students to express themselves. ” I have a small collection of zines myself and started looking into that as an option since the zine/indie arts community seems to be vibrant and alive,” she says.

Grade 9 Media Arts students Ilham Mojadidi and Adela Curkic show off their zines.

Last year two classes created zines which are now housed in the school’s library, and one class made a trip to an elementary school to share their zines with younger students.  After a visit to Canzine last year, Moulin thought it would be a fun place for students to share their zines with others. The theme of the student zines ranges from survival, to school clubs and sports, to “Lenny the Duck.”

“Being able to prepare for and encounter an authentic audience is such a valuable experience for the students as budding media artists,” Moulin says.

Keep an eye out for these talented students and their creations at Canzine West on November 17.
