Good-bye Canzine West!

This past Sunday, some 70 tablers turned up to show off their wares at Vancouver’s Ukrainian Hall for Canzine West. We saw comics, perzines, graf and art zines, pecan cupcakes, posters, one woman took up an unused table to eat her lunch and called it performance art – whatever goes! As always, the volunteers of Canzine West made the day, helping at the door, working the bar and staying late to mop the floor. Our friends at OCW Magazine and Project Space brought in some great talent for our readings and events, with two OCW writers facing off in the Literary Deathmatch at the end of the day.

Canzine West events took place up on the stage where every hour we opened the curtains, announced the next event and closed the curtains again. Thanks to Kevin Chong for giving an awesome reading of his latest novel Beauty Plus Pity (Arsenal Pulp Press) and dutifully answering our (sometimes silly) questions. To Eve Corbel, who gave a crash-course in zine-making and Keith Higgins, of the art book publisher Publications Studio, shared his wisdom in an intimate talk onstage. And, last but not least, Nathan Sellyn and Sean Cranbery for hosting and judging the Indie Writer’s Deathmatch, where we heard some great Vancouver talent.

Throughout the day, people came up to say Canzine West was bringing in a very diverse audience: people interested in comics, zines, graphic design, art or illustration. We’re just glad to have hosted a space where all this indie art and culture could be brought together under one roof. Hope to see you all again next year!

Special thanks to Jean Smith for taking these photos and sharing them with us!

  1. Sometimes, In my opinion non-English spammers make an effort to write something which is proper English, but it really doesn’t on a regular basis workout like this. One among my least favourite feedback is “Thanks because of this offered, very informative and positively”. I did not miss a thing. It ends with “positively”. There’s not a lot point itemizing different examples because they hold changing – just beware of comments that do not make a whole number of sense.
