Indie Events: August 22-29

For this week’s indie event, make a zine in 24 hours, listen to a new take on paranormal activity and sing a song about the Virgin Mary.

August 23, Story and Song Night Mary (and Jesus), Naco Gallery, 1665 Dundas Street West, 8PM, FREE

As part of the “Mary” exhibit happening at Naco Gallery and Cafe, featuring original artwork of the Virgin Mary, Naco Gallery is hosting a storytelling night on that theme. Donations are accepted.

Art + Bikes = ART SPIN!  Join the last edition of this bike-led gallery tour with special performances, videos and music.  Meet at the Trinity Bellwoods Park gates at Queen and Strachan by 7pm.  Free!

August 26 – 28, KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival 2011, Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture, 167 Augusta Ave.

This 6th annual cultural festival happening in Kensington Market starts with an art opening Friday night.  On Saturday, public readings and film screenings are scheduled throughout the day and the weekend closes with musical guests on Sunday, including Maylee Todd, Casey Mecija of Ohbijou and more!  There will be Filipino food and a licensed beer garden for everyone to enjoy!
VANCOUVER
Happening the fourth Tuesday of every month, participants are given a prompt and get 10 to 15 minutes to write something.  Bonnie Nish and Sita Carboni host this writing challenge.  Free.
