Indie Events: Sept 10 – Sept 16

Busy week. Some kind of film festival thing is happening in Toronto, and then there’s all these other fantastic events (like the Khyber Night Flea Market in Halifax, pictured above with some wares from Vagabond Vintage). Take a look!

TORONTO

Monday September 10, 7:40pm, Trampoline Hall Lecture Series, The Garrison, 1197 Dundas Street West, advance tickets at Soundscapes

The latest installment of the beloved lecture series continues tonight. Curated by Kelly Jenkins, the night will feature Rea McNamara on the Jane Fonda Workout, Alec Donovan on Satisfaction and Katie Hood on Prison Theatre. You can still snap up $6 advance tickets if you run to Soundscapes at 572 College Street and a small number of $5 rush tickets are available at the door beginning at 6:30pm.

HAMILTON

Friday September 14 – Saturday September 15, 7pm (Friday), 12pm (Saturday) Supercrawl 2012, James Street North

Supercrawl is an annual arts and music festival that celebrates the diversity of Hamilton’s James Street North district, a multi-disciplinary arts community. Supercrawl brings together public art installations and free concerts on three stages in a large section of downtown Hamilton that is closed to traffic. This year’s event features performances by musician C.R. Avery and poet Tanya Davis as well as tons of live art installations and sculptures, including a beehive textual installation from the Beehive Craft Collective and a giant outdoor mural by En Masse. For more information, check out the Supercrawl website.

MONTREAL

Friday September 14, 8:30pm, Montreal Strip Spelling Bee: Cats Edition, MainLine Theatre, 3997 boul. Saint Laurent, $10

Another dazzling night of sexy brainy types spelling words and doffing their clothes. The winner will get (a) a CD with recordings of over an hour of cats purring loudly; (b) a Choose Your Own Adventure style book written from the POV of a housecat, which is a concept that rules so hard that I am kind of speechless.

Saturday September 15, 9:30pm, Montreal Back 2 School Slowdance, MainLine Theatre, 3997 boul. Saint Laurent, $10

Cuz all you want to do is dance, dance (slowly). Get snuggly after a week of buying new notebooks and getting lost on the way to class. Dancecards and designated slowdancers will make you feel all better.

VANCOUVER

Wednesday September 12, 7pm, In(Formal) Disclosures Screening and Artist Talk, Access Gallery, 222 East Georgia Street

Through a presentation of their newest works, alongside the projects of Feminist Art Gallery contemporaries, Toronto-based media artists Chase Joynt and Alexis Mitchell ask us to question what it means to create documentary works that seemingly utter personal truths. How do the voice and the body formally function in these works as way to disclose, claim and/or queer stories of the self? What does it mean to fictionalize, satirize and/or illustrate personal experiences or utterances as a way to transform their potential interpretations by the public? This is part of the Feminist Art Gallery (FAG) Satellite at Access Gallery, highlighting installations by emerging feminist artists. For more information about this event and others coming up this month, please visit the gallery’s website.
