In case you missed it, Broken Pencil editor Jonathan Valelly gave Liz Mason a ring today, and you can still listen in!

Liz Mason is not only the manager of the legendary zine mecca Quimby’s Bookstore in Chicago,  a prolific zinester, and a true champion of all things zine, she is also… our third judge for the Broken Pencil Zine Awards 2020!

What advice does Mason have for potential zine awards entrants!

“What I’m not interested is when someone writes in their zine, ‘I didn’t really know what to write about, I just slapped this together.'” Mason continues,  “I wan to see somebody who put some thought into it, or maybe it’s obvious that as you were writing it you learned something.”

“But there’s definitely room for spontaneity, I just wanna see some thoughtfulness.”

We’ve extended our deadline until July 15th, so you still have time to enter your zine now.

Check out our FAQs and listen in on JV and Liz Mason as they chat about the award categories, judging, mailing entries and lots of other useful stuff. But of course, there are asides made for 30 second DIY envelope tutorials, Golden Girls commentary and sneaky international zine trafficking.
