Toronto’s Book Bakery “Fund-Fair” and Book Launch

Unconventional, not-for-profit publishing house, the Book Bakery, is hosting a fun-filled fair tomorrow night (Wednesday) with carnival games, a bake sale, readings of fresh new writing published by the Bakery and a raffle that includes prizes donated by Kobo, the Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club, The Walrus magazine, St. Joseph Media, Boylesque Toronto and more. It will be “everything you remember from elementary school, including fun prizes and tons of sugar.”

All proceeds will go to support the Book Bakery, a DIY publishing outfit operating out of the basement of coffee shop Capital Espresso since February. But just what makes this project deserving of your time and money? Derek McCormack (of Type Books and the Book Bakery) explains what the community-based art initiative is all about:

“What we do here is pretty novel, though not original. We’re building on a model that was introduced by Matthew Stadler. He began the original print-on-demand studio (Publication Studio, he called it) in Portland several years ago. Since then, he has helped to set up Studios in San Francisco, Vancouver, the Midwest, and Los Angeles.

“The Bakery is an outpost of his studio, with some differences. We have a different name. We are focusing on visually-oriented books (art books, collaborations between writers and artists, visual experiments by people who are known primarily for their writing). We are also working on lines of objects and jewelry.

“It’s important, too, for people to know that we’re not a publishing house in the traditional sense. We don’t accept submissions [and we don’t] distribute our titles. They’re created here, in-Bakery. They’re co-creations by our team and by the participating artists. They’re made by hand. Sometimes they are made in small editions (a hundred or so copies).”

If the event-packed description is not enough to spark your interest, one Fund-Fair organizer, Grace O’Connell, is brimming over with excitement about another special part of the night.

“We can’t help it – we’re all excited about the author kissing booth and the foxy scribes who are kindly donating their lips for literature,” says O’Connell. The booth will feature local stars like Andrew Pyper, Stacey May Fowles and Dani Couture.

Working mostly with local artists and writers, McCormack hopes that the Book Bakery continues “an amazing DIY tradition of Queen Street West art.”

Be sure to stop by tomorrow night for your fill of sugar, kisses, and literature.
