A delightful and delicious food-themed issue: Cul-de-sac #9

Cul-de-sac #9

Zine, Liz Mason, 44pgs, lizmasonissawesome.com, $5 USD

The smell of popcorn always hits different at the movies. The snacks at the concession stand always looked better than they did at any other store and the drinks being bigger than your head always called for a nice sugar filled seating and mid viewing washroom breaks.

In this, the most recent Cul-de-sac from prolific Chiago zine star Liz Mason, our hero delivers a delightful and delicious food-themed issue with various contributors. The opening few pieces are  homages to the movie theatre concession stand, followed by odes to other beloved snacks and then the mechanics of personal eating habits and quirks. The zine reads like a series of blog posts: anecdotal, nostalgic, and along-for-the-ride style memoir writing puts you there in the cinema seat or traipsing behind on a quest for McDonald’s Happy Meal toys from the 80’s and 90’s. The writers also speak about experiences in “overeaters anonymous,” habits, delights, and ask questions like “How am I supposed to know what I’d want as my last meal?” Well, have you written up your menu?
