‘Metamorphoses’ has an unavoidable punch of feminist anger

Metamorphoses

Art zine, Emma Hambly and Niko Dalcin, 48 pgs, Ban/She, wearebanshe.com, $3

This collaboration by artistic duo Ban/She is fully wound-up with an unavoidable punch of feminist anger, and it is beautiful. A crisp, flowery but eerie cover sets the tone for the interior’s visual critiques against various aspects of the patriarchy. The pieces are mostly in black and white, and they are made up of collages of pictures. Each photograph, collage, and illustration has an underlying tone of rage, as though the creators’ pent-up anger at an unjust world is etched into each page. An Ovid quote, cut and paste into the zine, signals the attitude appropriately: “I shall declare your sin before the world, / and publish my own shame to punish you!”

At first glance, the zine is hard to overlook. In detail, it’s even harder to ignore its message.
