People’s Voice

The Communist Party of Canada runs candidates for office, publishes a paper and continues to have small pockets of support in organised labour and parts of the established left movements across the country. It does not serve as a focus for radical dissent; rather it seems to be more of a spectator as the world passes it by. In their major public face, that of The People’s Voice, we can find news of demonstrations and strikes and read about activities in other countries. This particular issue has a great deal of coverage of anti-Iraq war activities, an early analysis of the efforts of the governing Coalition of Progressive Electors in Vancouver, and a good piece on India’s AIDS crisis. It is not the most exciting read, but it is comforting. There really is an underlying optimism here that the world will be made better – a counterweight to the ongoing pessimism of the mainstream media. (Brian Burch)
