Yo’ Mama

This is the anti-Chatelaine of ladies magazines (even equipped with recipes), and instead of choosing what bag to buy or what diet to try –Yo’ Mama brings every flaw to light of what its like being a by-yourself DIY mom.

This is mothering on a budget: Here we find how to make maternity clothes, how to temper your child’s appetite for shoplifting, how to design an Emergency Preparedness Plan and how to establish credit (with a well versed sidebar of bank language for us counting our coins). But what strikes a chord the deepest is the Violence 101 insert, riddled with personal stories of violence against women. One woman’s starts with an abusive childhood, to reckless teen years, to only finding out she was pregnant when she felt the child kicking inside of her. Impressive and chilling, this is the magazine from and for the survivors. (Nadja Sayej)
