If you happen to be walking through Toronto’s financial district today, expect to be drawn in by some unusual artworks beneath the shadows of the towers. There’s an elephant, an image of Queen Elizabeth II, a children’s slide – but rather than paint and canvas, these colourful works are constructed entirely from boxed, packaged and canned food.
It’s part of the 15th annual art competition called Canstruction, where teams of artists, designers, engineers and students use donated food to create structures that are creative, iconic or quintessentially Canadian – all with the intent of raising awareness about food issues, hunger and poverty in Toronto. At the end of the competition, the pieces are disassembled and donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank. You can see the complete series of constructions on Facebook, and vote for your favorite.
