This year at our Radical Reading Series at Canzine Toronto, we’re happy to welcome horror author Ian Rogers!
Ian and Broken Pencil have a longstanding connection: in 2009 he had a piece published in our Canlit anthology from Broken Pencil #40 called Camp Zombie. Five years later, Ian has two books under his belt, including Every House Is Haunted, which features “The House on Ashley Avenue,” which was a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award and has been optioned for television by Universal Cable Productions. He is also the author of SuperNOIRtural Tales, a collection of stories featuring supernatural detective Felix Renn.
He’s also got a spooky and beautiful story in the upcoming Canzine issue of BP called “Train Girl” and will be joining our Radical Reading Series at Canzine Toronto! We asked Ian a few questions about Halloween and what he’ll be reading at Canzine TO! Don’t miss him!
What’s the best Halloween costume you’ve ever had?
Ian: For the past few years I’ve been dressing up as Spider-Man when I hand out candy to the kids that come to our house. It was supposed to be a one-time thing, but we started hearing from parents in the neighbourhood that their kids now believe that’s where Spider-Man lives, so I felt like I had to keep wearing the suit every Halloween. I figure once the kids are finally gone to college, I’ll be safe to change things up.
What’s the scariest story you’ve ever read, and why did it scare you?
I would say Stephen King’s “The Mist” is probably the scariest story I’ve ever read. Mostly because I could actually picture the events unfolding in the way King describes if a mist full of monsters actually did show up one day. Always makes me think twice when I leave for work on foggy mornings.
What will you share with us at Canzine?
I was thinking about reading a bit from my story, “Train Girl,” that will be published soon in Broken Pencil. But then I though since I’m known as a horror guy, and Canzine is close to Halloween, maybe I should read an excerpt from my Black Lands story, “Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Law.” It’s coming out as an eBook short from ChiZine Publications on Halloween and it has some funnier parts in it, so I’m thinking that may be the way to go.
