This photo depicts an early installation of the Locker Project, a new art display set up at Kingston’s Loyalist College and Vocational Institute. The project was spearheaded by Mark Reinhart, who also created the Queer Archive (which we wrote about in BP #56). He says his aim is to introduce the high school’s students to the concept of installation art. After getting the ok from the school’s administration, Reinhart fitted a locker with a door made from a type of plexiglass. He submitted the first installation (a careful arrangement of red pylons, pictured) to coincide with the school’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Other installations have featured piles of yarn and rubber balls. Reinhart says students’ reactions to the locker have been fascinating: “Some of them just walk by and don’t notice at all,” he says, “and others have definitely stopped in their tracks.” Submissions are open to students and artists everywhere. You can follow the project on Instagram @thelockerproject and send submissions to [email protected]. (Alison Lang)
