Melissa writes about her time volunteering with agencies on Mexico-United States border that help Mexicans who are crossing the border illegally through the frontier, despite all the obstacles of government-sanctioned and vigilante-style US border patrol. These are excerpts from her journal; blunt and emotional, outraged, outlining her awakening to the issue. Melissa writes about the people she meets who have walked miles without food, water or cover in the frigid cold of the desert night, in order to cross into the States and look for work. As much as this relays personal experience, it’s also a rallying cry against the abstract (and impossible) idea of impermeable borders, and the racism and classism that cultivate the fear keeping political borders in place.
