Some Dads
Some Dads, Independent, somedads.bandcamp.com
These dads clearly listened to a lot of Pavement and Built to Spill in the 1990s. Pop music repeatedly emerges from their songs in spite of their best attempts to avoid it. Sounds from the heyday of alt-rock — think Alice In Chains, Aereogramme — are also well represented, and the subject matter is fittingly grim until the arrival of “Fuck You David Usher,” a recollection of the Moist frontman’s attempts to sneak into shows without paying and take over stages when he’s not invited. This debut is a serious downer, but it’s incredibly successful at being a downer.
