This chunky effort defies category and is fast on its way to becoming one of my favourite zines. There’s fiction, reviews, comix, a profile of the New Mentality Cult (sorry, Institute), Re/Search’s V. Vale, an interview with the Mr. T Experience, and all of it’s interesting, nicely laid-out and worthwhile. The best part is the extensive interview (part two) with film director Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil). Stanley is incredibly forthcoming with inside poop on how he got unceremoniously dumped from the disastrous Island of Dr. Moreau starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer, only to be replaced by veteran John Frankenheimer. Stanley is not pleased with the results either, and it’s not often you’ll get one artist castigating a legend for the omission of a sex scene. “It’s inexplicable,” Stanley says of one character. “He doesn’t even fuck her.” (DF)
