This is the sports issue. There is a lot (tongue and cheek) about sports. Shonen Knife also say a few words about sports. Shonen Knife interviews are always hilarious, and will eternally leave me wondering if they pretend to be goofy, really are goofy, or don’t have the slightest clue because goofiness is some kind of taboo subject in Japan. Nik Cambie’s too brief discussion about the Canuck’s near victory last year was extremely evocative of modern urban sports living. The more you identify with your team, the more you identify with the fellow citizens of your city. When you lose, your city is embarrassed by really pathetic riots and, well, as Nik himself writes “idiots wreck the party.” A final note about Emit is the amount of correspondence they seemed to receive concerning an article they ran in a previous issue about Nirvana. These letters, assuming they are not bogus, reveal an awkward teen sincerity/confusion about what Cobain represents. Will Cobain be a forgotten dead pop star, or will he actually leave a lasting impression in the minds of youngsters? Is the 20-30 year old crowd too jaded to undergo a similar process of guilt, confusion and sympathy? Emit gets you thinking.
