The first issue of surrogate brain proves it to be the most Canadian ‘zine I have yet to see. This is very exciting! Canadian kitsch! What — no Cobain, no Shonen Knife, no Star Trek? All right! At last a ‘zine that celebrates bad CBC shows (an entire page entitled: “Degrassi: A Mecca Of Relevance For Us Youthful Folk”). The short fiction/fantasy in which Parizeau loses his temper at a debate over separatism and subsequently snaps Johnson’s neck while Tom Cruise — “who cared deeply about the separatist cause in spite of his Americanness” — looks on approvingly is just about the best damn thing I could hope for in a proud to be Canadian ‘zine. An entirely different course is plotted for this fine country in the grey matter of Canada’s Surrogate Brain.
