And the winner of Deathmatch 2013 is: Nana K. Adjei-Brenyah

The voters have spoken, and Nana K. Adjei-Brenyah’s story “Cardigan Blues” has won the Broken Pencil Indie Writer’s Deathmatch this year.

Nana will receive a prize pack including a consulation with literary agent Sam Hiyate of the Rights Factory, a feedback session with novelist and Globe and Mail columnist Russell Smith and a feedback session with Coach House Books. All this plus publication in Broken Pencil and cash!

The top 3 runners-up – Jeanie Keogh, Brittany Smith and Terri Favro –  get $100 and publication in Spring 2013 issue of Broken Pencil Magazine.

Congrats to Nana and the finalists, and all our competitors, who fought hard and strong to get their stories in shape for this edition of Deathmatch. Get caught up on all the craziness at our Deathmatch 2013 arena and keep an eye out for our Spring issue, which will feature the top four stories plus a round-up of the best and worst comments.

Alison Lang is the editor of Broken Pencil Magazine. She also writes about music and horror for a number of publications, including the Quill & Quire, Exclaim! and Rue Morgue, and has lectured on Satanic cults in cinema for The Black Museum lecture series in Toronto. She loves dogs, doom metal and karaoke and makes a mean motherfuckin' rice pilaf.

    1. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any
      issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?
      My website has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but
      it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without
      my permission. Do you know any techniques to help prevent
      content from being stolen? I’d certainly appreciate it.

    I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said
    “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She
    placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit
    crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
