As part of International Zine Month, we’ll be posting a zine review a day on our blog in July. Today’s review is so new it hasn’t appeared in any issues yet. ZOMG.
Zine, SECKS: no sex, PAYS CASH., WOE_ne/Leone Mccomas, http://www.leonemccomas.com/, $10
I’d feel pretty embarrassed in public reading this book, if I wasn’t busy laughing my ass off.
Leone Mccomas blasts euphemism aside in SECKS: no sex, PAYS CASH., a black-and-white colouring book highlighting the ridiculousness of the private and public worlds of sex. Populated by harlots and porn stars drawn with thick markers on double-sided card paper, Mccomas’ satirical adult classifieds folds out centrefold-style, making it difficult to read single-handedly. The so-called slyness of adult ads and strange innuendos are poked silly in SECKS, with such classics as a chicken tied in rope bondage-style moaning softly, its anal cavity censored with a star. While the goal of her work is to be defaced, the lack of colour makes the bold-faced suggestiveness starker. Leaving hues up to the readers’ imaginations is a nice interactive option that would be interesting to see explored in more zines. My only critique would be the few random illustrations that are unrelated to any common advertisement method. They contribute to overall flow but fail to add anything new to SECKS’ message. We have a very talented composer working with us to create our original soundtrack for the game. His name is Jeremy Soule, and he’s quite the accomplished musician, both in the game industry and in the JPop music scene. He’s extremely talented and busy, yet he’s making himself available to Gaians to discuss what the music industry is like, what it’s like to work with zOMG!, and other cool stuff.
