Café Con Leche is Roñas Roi and Inés Estrada. The two Mexico City-based artists joined forces both creatively and romantically a few years ago, and together they make an array of crazy, colourful, impossibly lovely work – their handmade stuffed animals explode from photos, while their drawings and cartoons are equal parts sexy, wild, cute and bizarre. They also make gifs, a regular “podcat” that features their awesome taste in music, and there’s also a shop where you can buy a variety of their creations. Truly, Cafe Con Leche lives and breathes and exudes the artful life – they chronicle their hearts and minds with a zeal that is invigorating and vital. We urge you to visit their websiteand soak everything in, and then come back here and read our questions with them.Broken Pencil: How long have you two been making art?
Café Con Leche: Each of us had been making art stuff before meeting each other, and we’ve been doing things together since 2008.
You two make a lot of different things! What is your favorite medium to use (drawing, animation, stuffed items, etc)
We enjoy all mediums equally, the choice depends on our humor. Sometimes we feel watercolor and others like stuffing, and sometimes we just want to make sandwiches.
What’s the DIY craft/art culture like in Mexico City?
First of all, the concept of “DIY culture” is not widely spread, so we doubt most of the people we consider could be part of it wouldn’t say so themselves. For example, kids doing Naruto fan-art zines and selling them at the small anime cons here could be considered DIY artists, but they’re probably not even familiar with the term.
From our point of view, there isn’t a cohesive community with a defined space that serves as a reference point for the things that are done in the city. As our city is so big, we can find various DIY artistic communities, encapsulated by specific interests without communication in between themselves.
Little by little, we have come to conform a community that revolves around the making of zines, music and graphic arts with local artists and others that have come to live here from Monterrey in recent years, running away from the radicalization of violence caused from the war between the military and organized crime in their city.
One of the actions we have made together with these artists has been the festival of fanzines and independent publications Zin Amigos, of which the first edition was in April this year. We’ve made it three times already, and we’re now planning on the fourth one. It’s been modestly successful and hopefully it has helped spread the concept of “zine” a bit more around here and encourage some people to start making their own.
How did you two meet each other?
Our encounter has nothing to do with art at all (or does it?)… we met one beautiful night dancing “high energy” in a club named Patrick Miller. Since that night, we’re inseparable.
What do you guys do when you’re not making things?
Sometimes we have the bad habit of studying, but usually we enjoy dancing, playing Nintendo, enjoying the pleasures of eating and other things that might be illegal for you to put in your magazine.
I love your podcast taste in music. How do you incorporate this podcast into the wider scope of your interests (or do you?)Music is a fundamental part of everything we do. We live to have the appropriate musical selection for each activity: cooking, making bastardines, painting or whatever it is we’re doing. Each podcast is a mirror of the moment in which we did it.
An outstanding share! I have just forwarded this onto a colleague who was doing a little homework on this.
And he in fact bought me dinner due to the fact that
I found it for him… lol. So let me reword this….
Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending some time to talk about this
subject here on your internet site.
Definitely believe that which you said. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the internet the easiest thing to be aware of.
I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they plainly don’t know about.
You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole
thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal.
Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
Hola! I’ve been following your web site for some time now and finally got the bravery
to go ahead and give you a shout out from Lubbock Tx!
Just wanted to say keep up the excellent work!
Its such as you learn my mind! You appear to know so much about this, such as you wrote the
e-book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few % to force
the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog.
A great read. I will certainly be back.
I constantly emailed this webpage post page to all my
contacts, because if like to read it after that my contacts will
too.
You ought to take part in a contest for one of the most useful
blogs online. I will highly recommend this blog!
