Cheer up for a moment with Liz Mason’s ‘Awesome Things #3’ Zine

Awesome Things #3

It can be easy to focus on the negative aspects of life, particularly in these difficult times. Cheer up for a moment with the third volume of prominent Chicago zinester Liz Mason’s Awesome Things. In a cute and expertly laid out zine, Mason lists some of the people, activities and fleeting moments she loves and wants to document.

In no particular order, here are some of those awesome things that especially made me laugh: “Animals with tusks. Imagine how many locks you could pick if you had tusks.” Next, “When one thinks the pet is going to leave their lap, but no, they’re just readjusting. Even better, when the pet does not leave when you’re readjusting.” Last but not least, “Short lines at taco stands. And that the phrase ‘Taco Stand Short Line’ would be the best band name ever.”

Mason is a clever and hilarious wordsmith, and her short lists and anecdotes truly brought me joy. There is so much beauty in the world if we can stop and pay attention.

Although the premise for this zine might seem ridiculous or unnecessary to some grumps, it is a funny, well executed reminder to appreciate small pleasures and write them down before you forget the details.
