The title pretty much says it all, but we are pretty tickled by the venerable Canadian indie publication This Magazine’s latest fundraising campaign, wherein Coach House publicist, author and illustrator Evan Munday has pledged to eat 47 veggie hot dogs in 2 hours if the magazine’s fundraising goal of ($4,700) is reached in 30 days as a campaign to coincide with the magazine’s 47th birthday.(Note that one of the perks is a “please don’t eat 47 hot dogs in one sitting” category, if you are worried about Munday’s digestive health. If you donate in this category, he will draw you a picture of a hot dog!)
Food contests aside, you should really just throw them a few bones. This is a great, important countercultural voice in Canada, and its call for assistance comes at a timely moment, as the autonomy of public broadcasting comes under threat from the Harper government. Indie media is more important than ever, and distinctive voices need to be bolstered. Let’s help each other out, and help This maintain a long and healthy life.
