Georgia Webber’s compelling and absolutely gorgeous autobiographical comic about prolonged voice-loss— DUMB— is halfway done. But to finish the series, Georgia needs to make sure she’s got the coins and the purchases she’ll need down the line. So she’s frontloading her sales through an indiegogo campaign— meaning, if you donate, you’ll get the issues free down the line when they launch at TCAF 2015.
If you don’t know about DUMB, you really should. In a simple but far-from-subdued red/white/black colour scheme, Georgia tells the story of how an apparent vocal strain went from a catastrophic disruption to her life, to a familiar but always changing facet of her daily existence, to the fodder for artwork. The constant negotation of communication and self-expression that this whole situation create takes on a new level of meaning in Georgia’s expressive and elegant illustrations and writing. Each issue of Dumb also includes an essay or anecdote about speech, language, communication, noise, or relevant topic from someone other than Georgia.
This project deserves to happen, and to happen soon. Buy your books now, and you won’t regret it!
