Indie Events: Feb 25 – March 3

 

TORONTO

Thursday Feb 28, 7-10pm, Found in Translation: Nicole Brossard and Jocelyne Saucier, The Monarch, 12 Clinton Street, free

This spring, Coach House Books will publish a new poetry book by francophone literary legend (and multiple Governor General’s Award winner) Nicole Brossard: White Piano. The book follows  Jocelyne Saucier’s And the Birds Rained Down, winner of the Prix des Cinq Continents de la Francophonie, and finalist for the Grand Prix de la ville de Montreal. The two authors will launch and read from their newest English translations at The Monarch Tavern. Brossard and Saucier will read short passages in French, while Margaret Christakos (What Stirs, Welling) will read the English translation of Brossard’s work, and Rhonda Mullins, translator of And the Birds Rained Down, will read the translation of Saucier’s novel. Followed by a discussion.

Thursday Feb 28, 7-9pm, What Are You Doing Here? A Black Woman’s Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal, Another Story Bookshop, 315 Roncesvalles, free

In her first non-fiction book, Laina investigates how metal, hardcore and punk music and culture can serve as a liberating and empowering vehicle for Black women to express their individuality. Part memoir, the book includes interviews with black female metal, punk and hardcore fans, musicians and industry workers about their experiences in the extreme music scene.
Broken Pencil presents original fan-generated material from authors all over the world, performed live by Toronto’s funniest comedians. After 8 months of standing room-only shows, ‘Fan Fiction The Show’ meets the best-selling classic work of Bilbo Baggins’ adventures in Middle Earth. Learn more about the event here.

Nicole J. Georges is hitting the road in support of her brand new graphic memoir Calling Dr. Laura. Cassie J. Sneider is ready to regale you with stories from her famously life-changing book Fine Fine Music. Both are giving live advice, with special guests. Talkin’ bout love, romance, relationships, pets and suchlike.
