Now in her final year as a graphic design student at Toronto’s Ontario College of Art and Design, art zinester Marta Ryczko creates beautiful and highly collectable forms of ephemera. We asked her what inspires her to make her hilarious zines, fancy books and fun prints.
“The reason I make zines is a little selfish, because for me it’s a bit of an outlet from my regular projects, which are usually for other people, and not myself. The other reason is a little mundane, but I just really like making things. I enjoy the drawing, the writing, and most of all I am really into the production. Often when I make a zine, my apartment looks like a little factory with its own assembly line. I have a strong interest in printmaking and DIY, so making zines is just the perfect blend of those things. Finally, I make them because I am a fan of the zine community in Toronto. There’s a bunch of fantastic people that I have met through making zines and prints that I otherwise wouldn’t have and I think that’s the best reason for making them.”
Marta’s zine How to Swear Successfully in Polish will be excerpted in the upcoming issue of Broken Pencil. In the meantime, you can check out more of her work here: www.martaryczko.com
