Who says August is the slowest month of summer? This week’s a doozy, check out all the goings-on below….

TORONTO:

August 8, What Cheer! Brigade, Rancho Relaxo, 300 College St. $6

Two Way Monologues presents this 19-piece brass band from Rhode Island that specializes in a weird hybrid of instrumental punk.

August 11, A Queer Story: Reading and Writing with three Toronto authors at Another Story Bookshop 7-10pm

As part of the Queer West Fest, authors Farzana Doctor, Vivek Shrava and Zoe Whittall will be presenting” an interactive writing workshop” at Another Story Bookshop at 315 Roncesvalles Avenue.

August 11-14, Bicycle Film Festival, at the Royal Theatre, 608 College St., $10-$30 for tickets to festival passes

Taking place in dozens of cities around the world, this film fest is coming to Toronto this weekend with movies of operatic couriers and and  differently-abled cyclists.

August 11, Pretty, Strange: Julie Moon solo exhibit opening reception, Narwhal Art Projects, 7pm

Come to Narwhal Gallery (rear entrance) at 680 Queen West for the opening reception of ceramic artist Julie Moon’s exhibition. Artist in attendance. Exhibit runs until September 4th.

August 13 + 14, The ALL CAPS! Island Festival, at Artscape Gibraltar Point,

Wavelength, Artscape Gibraltar Point and WhipperSnapper present the ALL CAPS! Island Festival – a weekend of indie music and  art, including Evening Hymns, Julie Doiron, DD/MM/YY, Dog Bus and more. Also: bonfires, BBQs, swimming and camping. Doors @ 4pm. Tickets $12-$25, at Soundscapes and Rotate This.

August 13, Toronto Queer Midsummer Slow Dance at Dovercourt House, 9pm-2am
, $10

Come get your drink and dance on at Dovercourt House (805 Dovercourt) at the midsummer edition of the always-fun Queer Slow Dance. Regrettably not accessible. 19+. If you want to be a designated dancer who are tasked with encouraging wallflowers to get on the floor, write to [email protected]

MONTREAL:

On-going, Fresh Paint/New Construction at Art Mûr, open Tuesday to Saturday, 12-6pm

It’s not too late to visit Art Mur at 5826 St-Hubert to see an inspiring exhibition of work from emerging artists from  the Maritimes.
Montreal Pride Celebrations, on René-Lévèsque W. from Guy to Sanguinet.

The theme for this year’s  Montreal Pride  is “Share the Pride and the festivities begin tomorrow and end on Sunday with a dance party at Parc Émilie-Gamelin. Or you could check out Pervers/cite,the indie version of these festivities that hosts such events as  cross-city tag, a debutantes ball and workshops.

Generation whY: exploring the voices of craft makers 35 & younger, Alberta Craft Council Feature Gallery, open Monday to Saturday, 10am-5pm

The Alberta Craft Council presents the work of craft makers 35 years and younger. On-going until August 27   at 10186 – 106 street.
