Quite frankly, this magazine, with its slick design and wonderful production, confused me. It really looks beautiful and is a delight to hold in the hands, and there is some particularly strong text inside. Standouts include David Burke’s “Girls I Have Kissed” and Farideh de Bosset’s “A November Child.” But what I don’t exactly get is the point of the magazine. There seems to be some connection to the University of Guelph, but I just can’t see what the connection is. Who are these people who put out this fine work? Is it a university project? Regardless, Carousel is a fine read. As in any collection, there’s some dead weight, but fortunately most of these pieces are quite well done. One final thing: because Carousel is so slick and polished in so many ways, the editors might want to spend more time copyediting for typos and spelling errors. (Jon Pressick)
