In “Crushpuppy,” Sarah R. writes a quick series of love letters that are at once earnest, short and to the point, and filled with emotions expressed almost matter-of-factly…like two-sentence notes of earth-shattering high drama left on the school desks of yesteryear. To her family: “I love even your dark dirty secrets –.” To a friend: “I’ve never said thanks for being there before but I am now –.” To an ex-girlfriend: “The time we spent together made me stronger –.” There are letters to friends, family, famous actresses (“dear Emma Thompson,”) even to cookies that taste so good, they lead our author to wonder how they could ever be bad. Sarah R. seems to be a bit of a cookie, herself: nutty and likely to crumble under the slightest pressure, but sweet, and quite enjoyable. (Andree Lachapelle) (Andree Lachapelle)
