The Bulgars have dropped some words from their band name, added a new producer in Dave Newfeld (best known for his work with Broken Social Scene), and mostly replaced Yiddish with English. The result is an occasionally self-conscious but largely successful album full of Klezmer-inflected anti-ballads. Propelled by the trumpet of musical impresario David Buchbinder and sung by longtime Bulger Dave Wall, the best of these songs speak to the repressed hysteria of modern Jewry — “Everyday we sing a folk song,” Wall half laments, half mocks. “And it’s as empty as a beggar’s old coat.” (Hal Niedzviecki)
