A group of high school friends on a road trip to New York to see Sonic Youth spend a night in the woods. They talk, open up to each other, reveal secrets and in doing so challenge the harmony of their tight knit group. The story is told in a daisy chain of individual voices that slowly reveal each character and their shared history. Despite a couple of lapses in dialogue, I found myself falling into this deftly arranged story, wrapped up in the emotions and sexual relations that tie these kids together. Reminiscent of the short stories printed in the classic early 90s issues of Sassy magazine, this also compares favourable to the endless self-examination of preternaturally mature youth on teen TV (from My So-Called Life on down). As an aficionado of that genre, let it be know that I am giving a compliment. The one (almost inexcusable) fault is the completely pointless, unnecessary and stupid ending which cancels out the possibility of a sequel. (TD)
