King-Cat Comics & Stories #77

John Porcellino, 40 pgs, Spit and a Half, spitandahalf.com, $7.20 US

John Porcellino’s legendary King-Cat Comics is back for its 77th issue — which in zine years is like Issue No. A Billion. This long-running comics anthology is a fan favourite, and it’s easy to see why. Porcellino uses deceptively simple zen-like lines to capture scenes and snippets from his life, which in turn reveal some universal (or at least human) truths.

As readers of his graphic novel The Hospital Suite know, Porcellino is not afraid to lay himself bare. His willingness to reveal himself even at his worst lends these comics a compelling narrative honesty. There aren’t that many creators who would tell a story about the time a bee stung them on the dick.

In addition to the above bee story, King-Cat Comics #77 is a grab bag of concepts in true zine fashion. Comics? Check! Lists? Check! Dreams? Check! Porcellino’s skill for blending different types of narratives makes for an eclectic and entertaining ride.
