Live, Laugh, Love #2
Miles Davitt, 28pgs, $3 @milesdavitt
I’ve always considered sketchbook zines as kind of an after thought, a non-genre mostly made up of student experiments, one-off mini-zines and random last-minute efforts thrown together the night before a zine fair (you know, to have something new to trade with). So I surprised myself by really enjoying this mish mash of doodles and drawings by the prolific New Zealand-based cartoonist Miles Davitt, kitschy title and all. Naturally, it lacks a through line, but there are some pretty solid jokes and a few surreal strokes, the likes of which are unlikely to have made it into any final project. These reveal Davitt to be a curious and relatable mind. The whole thing is quite charming, and has made me reconsider my impulse to turn my nose up at sketchbook zines. Good stuff.
