Edited out of Quebec City, housed on a server in Ireland, Minerva is what you call eclectic. According to its home page, this is an e-zine aimed at young Catholics, aiming to be “progressive” in its politics, dedicated to St. Teresa of Avila. Issue seven includes articles, some reprinted from other sources, on how to find accurate information about Catholicism on the Net, how much money Canadian banks make, how to stay chaste until your wedding night, the death penalty, Quebec sovereignty, abortion, and a few short poems, among other things. Its pretty much a straight-text experience, a portrait of St. Teresa being the only graphic element in the whole show, but the navigation is smooth and glitz isn’t really the point here. As the submission guide puts it, “Much of what is written in the mainstream press offends the sensibilities of Catholics; yet issues in Catholic magazines are often only seen from a religious point of view. Minerva seeks to rectify this dichotomy by presenting religiously neutral material which does not contradict Catholic teaching, as well as religious material.” If that’s what you’re looking for, try Minerva.
