This is a short comic, done in single panels in a simple drawing style. The cover is partly covered with Japanese paper, which is fitting, considering that the story takes place in Japan. I found the story a little bit difficult to figure out. It has a lot of technical terms from Sumo wrestling in it, as well as a very oblique story line. I don’t know if the vignette itself illustrates Meg’s familiarity with Japanese culture, or if it’s merely a convenient vehicle for her absurdist tale. Either way, some things could use more explanation, even if being nonsensical is the author’s goal. Why does Harumi’s mother look like Little Bo Peep, sheep and all? And what is “My Girl” anyway, a movie, a TV show, or just something made up? These questions aside, the characterization achieved is impressive given the brevity of the comic, and the overall style fits well with other titles in the new comics line of Conundrum Press.
