On Loving “Dracula”

On Loving “Dracula”

I have a confession to make: I have never seen the original 1931 Dracula, directed by Tod Browning. But after reading reguard’s zine, On Loving “Dracula,” I’m seriously considering it. Made in 24 hours (for the 24-Hour Zine Thing) on his 38th birthday, On Loving “Dracula” is redguard (a.k.a Greg Butterfield)’s love letter to the movie he describes as “a trailblazer and taboo-buster from start to finish.”

On Loving “Dracula” is charmingly simple: cut & paste stills from the movie, and a typewritten, earnest essay praising all things Lugosi. Redguard’s zine reads much like a feverishly written “What I Did This Summer” report by a particularly enthusiastic schoolboy. It’s genuine, unpretentious and thoroughly likable. (Clara Lavery)
