I’m all for slagging organized religion as much as possible. I like this issue’s attacks on life after death, on creationism, on Christian hypocrisy, on Muslim fundamentalism. What I’m not as enthusiastic about is the rather simple-minded equation of religion with evil. I don’t believe in any gods, but neither do I believe that someone who does is necessarily a bad person. This publication argues that the Bible, the Koran and other publications call for torture, killings, rapes etc. It says that “Islam, with its rigid dogma, lends itself particularly well to fascism.” Religious works certainly can be, and certainly have been, interpreted these ways. But I’ve read many of them, and I don’t think they have to be taken that way. Such sweeping generalizations only promote the intolerance The Canadian Atheist claims to be attacking. (KR)
