I wasn’t planning on reviewing this because I usually skip over non-Canadian recordings to focus exclusively on domestic music, of which there is always more than enough to fill up the pages. But these California kids stuck in a note that said they love Broken Pencil and buy it at Penny Lane “down here in Pasadena” and so I felt like I should. But then I thought, maybe they did the same thing with every magazine, adding in a personal note to get past the gatekeeper, to endear themselves to the music editor who spends lonely nights at home, waiting for someone to talk to, waiting for someone to show they care? Damn careerist Americans with their inbred marketing smarts! Or maybe they really read BP. Either way, the CD is a bit gothy, a bit Tori, a bit “intense”, but the band keeps things dramatic and I think that’s the intention. (Terence Dick)
