Queer Bodies in Confidence

About: Printed comic anthology focused on body positivity for queer men
Pay: One-time fee of $200 per page + copy of the published book
Submissions: Artists that identify within the LGBTQ community are asked to create a comic strip about how society and culture influence body image and the impacts they have on the mental and sexual health of queer men.

CA(S)H – Cards Against (Sexual) Harassment

About: The idea is to create a variety of cards that show different street harassment experiences and comebacks/answers to them. The cards are then made available for download. “We would also like to encourage people to submit cards in different languages or to just draw a picture that can be easily understood regardless of language.” The cards don’t have to only be about sexual harassment. People get harassed because of their skin colour, belonging to a minority or basically any reason you can think of. Every experience is valid and worth addressing.

Flash Monster Contest

About: Flash fiction contest
Entry fee: $6 during the early bird period and $7 after
Prize: $200 first place; $100 second place; $50 third place; publication for fourth through tenth places
Submissions: Fiction under 1,000 words (750 or fewer preferred) about a monster. Can be literal or figurative. Some examples: sewer-dwelling billionaires, druid squids, soul-swallowing cubicles, Cannibal Annabelles, passive-aggressive piranhas, were-clowns, etc.

Vast Zine, Volume 3

About: Compilation zine about love of space
Pay: Hard copy of the latest volume, PDFs of all three volumes
Submissions: Written (under 1,500 words), prose, poetry, and digital and traditional art.

Witness Annual Literary Award in Fiction and Poetry

Prize: $500 for one winner in each genre; $250 for runners-up; all entries considered for publication (pay: $25 for every 1,500 words of prose and $25 per poem; $50 for long poems)
Submissions: Fiction (under 8,000 words), 1-3 poems. “We welcome work that declares and/or demands a new perspective to the everyday condition, and stories that contextualize American experience, highlight issues of global concern, grapple with the relationship between the personal and the political (however defined), and/or keenly observe interior/exterior landscapes.”

About: Broken Pencil Magazine’s festival of zines and underground printed arts. One-day festivals celebrating zines, comics and underground printing held across Canada. ZINESTERS, registration to table is still open for Canzine Canzine Ottawa (October 13) and Calgary (October 27)!
