Fiction Editor – Broken Pencil: the magazine of zine culture and the independent arts

Part-time. Downtown Toronto.

Broken Pencil is now accepting applications for the volunteer position of Fiction Editor. This is an ongoing position performed on a part-time basis. Bi-monthly meetings in downtown Toronto are required. We offer an honorarium of $160 a month for this position.

The primary role of the fiction editor is to select and prepare for publication 18 stories annually (6 to be published in Broken Pencil magazine, 12 to be published on brokenpencil.com). The fiction editor also assists in selecting and preparing for publication the finalists for the Deathmatch Indie Short Story Contest. The fiction editor is assisted by the assistant fiction editors and coordinates their reading of submissions to the magazine. The fiction editor will also coordinate four to six meetings a year with the assistant fiction editors and the editorial team of Broken Pencil and attend occasional all-staff meetings.

The ideal applicant will have: *Familiarity with Broken Pencil Magazine, particularly our tradition of publishing new, exciting, unconventional fiction. *Familiarity with current and developing trends in independent writing, publishing and culture. *Proven knowledge of the small press scenes in Canada and the United States. *Excellent writing and editing skills. *A demonstrated ongoing commitment to developing and advancing independent literary culture. *A record of publication in the genre of fiction.
