Get Your Chapbook Funded
Press: JackPine
Funding: JackPine Press wants to fund artists, poets and creatives (emerging and professional). Successful chapbook proposals will receive $1,500 to make a limited edition chapbook. You’ll also get paid a reading fee to present your work at a launch/poetry reading in Saskatoon, as well as an all-expense-paid trip to the Paris of the Prairies for JackPine’s next launch.
Submissions: JackPine Press is looking for chapbook proposals that feature visual content, excellent writing, and great book design. This includes graphic novels, poetry, short essays, or whatever your incredible brain deems worth putting permanently in ink on bound paper. Literary merit, typography and binding techniques will be considered.

Mentor Program for Disabled/Neurodivergent Writers

Mentees: You can apply to be a mentee if you are a writer or poet who is disabled and/or neurodivergent (18 years or older) without a published full-length book, advanced degree, or agent.
Application: You can pitch two mentors from the provided list. There is no application fee.

Prize: Winning author will be paid a sum of money that is determined by the success of the contest (last year’s prize was $250) and a percentage of the book sales. More details on this online.
Submissions: Any genre (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, hybrid) written in English. Only previously unpublished scripts are accepted. The winning manuscript will be published solely as an audiobook.

Comics Anthology for Queer Readers, aged 13-17

Submissions: Submit a script for a full-colour comic that features queer-identified teenage protagonists with stories that speak directly to a queer experience. Diverse genres are welcome.

Perfectly Normal, Issue 1
Publication: Perfectly Normal Magazine
Type: Free digital zine
Who: Creators of marginalized identities. That means minorities based on sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, disability, etc. If you are unsure whether you qualify, feel free to reach out.
Pay: No pay
Submissions: Writing of any genre (poetry, prose, fiction, essay, journalistic report, etc.) and artwork such as illustrations, comics, photography, collage, or other media. Work that deals with the experiences of creators as part of a marginalized group, but any topics will be accepted as long as they do not include NSFW content or hate speech.

Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming Poets Issue
Publication: Poetry Magazine
Submissions: Unpublished poems for a special issue dedicated to the work of transgender, gender non-conforming, and other non-cis poets. Submit 1-4 poems, maximum 10 pages total.

Pay: 2 cents a word up to $100 and a minimum of $5.
Submissions: Innovative and genre-bending prose.

Zine Awards
Publication: Broken Pencil Magazine
Fee: BP Members can submit their first zine for $14 and can submit 2nd and 3rd zines for FREE. Non-member prices: first submission fee is $25. This comes with a 1-year subscription to Broken Pencil worth $32. Second and third submissions cost $10 each. There’s a maximum of three zine submissions per person.
Prize: $200 cash for each category winner. Winner of the Best Overall Zine gets an additional $400. Winners also be profiled in the magazine and on brokenpencil.com, and receive a Zine Awards trophy, which will be presented to them at Canzine Toronto. Both winners and nominees will have their zines sold on the BP store, be included at zine fairs and stores and presented at special displays at libraries.
Entry categories: Political Zine, Perzine, Comic Zine, Art Zine, Compilation Zine, Literary Zine, Micro Literary Journal, and Fanzine. Read more about the categories here.
Submissions: Zines should have been made between April 2017 and April 2018.
