Canzine Ottawa is just around the corner on October 13 at SAW Video and the OAG! Join us from 2 pm – 3 pm for Radical Zine Readings in the SAW Video Knot Project Space.
Zine makers from Ottawa and beyond will read new work from across the zine spectrum, including Tender Tita, Bitter Melanin Zine, From The Root Zine, the Letter Ve, Drive-in Saturdays and more!
Bitter Melanin: Adrienne is a queer filipinx second-generation immigrant guest on Algonquin territory. Her work revolves around community building, decolonization, undoing border imperialism, creating safe spaces and tenderness. She recently completed a zine series on diasporic identities, migration, queerness and parenthood titled Bitter Melanin.
The Letter Ve
The Letter Ve is a queer, non-binary, Chinese person who likes food, their cat, Bao, struggles with mental health, and expressing their emotions — and that’s okay! Creating and writing zines is a way for them to share and heal from previously being told that being vulnerable or sad makes you weak
Tender Tita
Fatima, also known as Tender Tita, is a queer second-generation Filipino-Canadian from Tkaronto. Her work is a project for her mental health and a means to explore many forms of art through zines, buttons, prints, and more. Operating at many intersections, Tender Tita aims to create a culture of vulnerability and healthy boundaries. Her work touches on many themes including, but not limited to, mental health, self-care, family, (platonic) love, trauma, and the Filipinx diaspora. She’ll be sharing pieces from her perzine “I don’t know how to translate this” and her affirmation zine, “To my love, from your admirer.”
Drive In Satudays
Dorian is a Métis person from the prairie but currently lives on the unceded Algonquin Anishiinabe land known as Ottawa. His interests include pop music, tabletop RPGs, and Indigenous activism. When he’s not podcasting, he works as a choral singer and is part of the Ottawa team for the Youth Reconciliation Initiative, a national project dedicated to building bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth and promoting reconciliation.
From the Root
From the Root is a zine dedicated to documenting stories, poetry, articles, testimonies and images of women of colour in Canada. Sometimes political, other times posh but always powerful, From the Root showcases voices from women navigating through this land called Canada in the skin they are in. This quarterly zine is distributed nation-wide with editors based in Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver.
