Vendor Q&A: Kim Edgar
Who are you? Why are you coming to Canzine?
I’m an artist and illustrator living in Dawson City, Yukon. I am coming to Canzine Vancouver because I went to Canzine Toronto and Ottawa last year and I loved to see how different the Canzines were in each city. Now that I’m back in western Canada, I’m curious to see how Vancouver’s Canzine will be!
Have you been before? If so, what’s your fondest Canzine memory?
The first time I went to Canzine was last year in Toronto, when my comic got nominated for best comic with the Broken Pencil Zine Awards. I was blown away by how many people there were and how busy the event was! I think my fondest memory was tabling at Canzine Ottawa. It was much smaller and more compact but people were so engaged! Ottawa is also my hometown, so it was nice to see people and old friends from when I grew up there.
Why do you create?
As cliche as it sounds, I create because I have to. I learned very early on in life that if I am not making things my mental health and quality of life declines rapidly. I also create because I’ve made it my job. There are very few things I can do sustainably and consistently as a career, and being an artist is one of those few things. As weird as it has been to monetize something that I consider my lifeblood, it also feels incredibly right that I am pursuing art full-time.
