Nods

Jeana is 18, a Jello Biafra fan, a waitress, stuck with her parents and her two younger brothers – needless to say, she “anticipates moving out every day” of her life. All this I find out in the introduction to her zine. But then, lo and behold, the zine starts with: “So I’m finally going to be moving out this summer and this just totally blows my mind away.” In case you haven’t guessed, this is a personal zine. Jeana gives us the details of graduating from high school, moving out etc. There is also a good section about the summer of 1995, which she describes as her “version of the summer of love.” At fourteen, she smokes pot, wears weird clothes, loiters in the 7-11 and makes cool friends. As she says, “when I look back on the times we shared I realize how retarded we were but at the same time I wouldn’t change any of it for a second. In some strange and twisted way that summer is a big part of who I am today and I wouldn’t give that up for anything.” Jeana’s alright and her zine is pretty good too. (HN)
