Wussy Boy! Big Poppa E is a slam poet based out of Chico, California, who was a member of the San Francisco team that took first place at last year’s National Poetry Slam. “The Wussy Boy Manifesto” is a compendium of his most well-known poems, named after his “signature” piece that has garnered a lot of praise nationwide. BPE’s work is a real treasure to listen to – unfortunately, the book suffers the same fate as many slam poets’ work, which is of having the poetry fall flat when printed on the page. Still, it’s an entertaining chap and a nice addition to any self-published collection. My favorite line still has to be from the terminally neurotic “Crushworthy:” “I want someone to make up nicknames for me, to talk about me in code – ‘I saw Backpack Boy today in the library, in the Romantic Lit section…'” (JP)
